Making The Montgomery GI Bill Work For You
There are many benefits available to veterans. One of the best benefits that veterans can receive is the Montgomery GI Bill. This bill provides veterans who have served our country with financial assistance to attend an institution of higher learning.
This bill allows veterans to attend college after their tour in the military is over without having to pay for anything. However, the money does not just pay for college. There may be individuals who do not want to attend college. The bill also allows for them to receive training in a specialized field.
These training courses can often include classes in vocational or technical training, or classes pertaining to entrepreneurship. The bill also pays for correspondence courses, overseas classes, and tests needed for certain licenses and certifications.
There is a limit to the types of courses that the bill will pay for. The bill will not provide financial assistance for any type of course that will not eventually lead to a career. Self improvement, personality development, and bartending classes are not allowed under the MGIB.
Under the bill, vets have a ten year window to use their GI benefits. This is ten years after they leave the military. After leaving the military, it can take a while for the veteran to assimilate to a world that is different than the military. A ten year time frame gives the individual enough time to pick a new career, choose a school, and start on their new career path.
There are a few restrictions for using the GI Bill. A person who does not possess a high school diploma or a GED cannot use this benefit. Also, if the person has served less than one tour or was dishonorably discharged from their branch of service, they will not qualify for this benefit. Veterans should speak to a Veteran’s Assistance representative or counselor to ensure their eligibility.
